The Portable Medkit is an inventory item in Duke Nukem 3D and its ports.
Description[]
The Portable Medkit provides instant relief for anyone unable or unwilling to go look for a Small or Large Medkit.
A new Portable Medkit contains a total of 100 health points. Upon using it, health points are immediately transferred from the Portable Medkit to the player until either they are at full (100) health or the Portable Medkit has no more health points to give (upon which it is automatically discarded).
Picking up a new Portable Medkit when holding a partially used one will cause you to discard your currently held one and pick up the new one. The health points in the partially used Portable Medkit will therefore be lost, so it is wise to collect them carefully.
In ports and expansions[]
- In Duke Caribbean: Life's a Beach, the Portable Medkit is renamed the Crate of Bananas (continuing the theme of banana-related health items).
Trivia[]
- In Duke Nukem 3D: 20th Anniversary World Tour, the Small Medkit, Large Medkit, and Portable Medkit all had their sprites updated such that the symbolic red cross has been replaced with a symbol of a red and white pill. This was done because the International Committee of the Red Cross had previously filed lawsuits against other game developers for using the red cross symbol, which is not public domain.
- The Portable Medkit is capable of providing the largest single boost to a player's health in the game, which is 99 points (for a player originally at 1 hit point).
- It is widely regarded by players as one of the most useful items in the game, for its versatility (no points are wasted during use), convenience ("portable") and its very useful effect (major healing).
