Nuclear Showdown

Nuclear Showdown is a total conversion for Duke Nukem 3D: Atomic Edition that was created by James Stanfield and originally released August 3, 2007. The mod was later overhauled and re-released as version 2.0 on November 5, 2016. A forum user and computer programmer by the alias "Nightfright" made significant contributions to the code in version 2.0. The most recent iteration is version 2.1, released November 22, 2016.

Nuclear Showdown features all of the enemies from Duke Nukem 3D: Atomic Edition, as well as the following new enemies:

Restored melee attack

Prior to the 1996 release of Duke Nukem 3D, an animation of the Pig Cop striking the player with the butt of its shotgun was developed but scrapped from the final game. Nuclear Showdown restores the scrapped animation; all Pig Cops in the game will execute a melee attack if the player gets too close, actively pushing the player backwards.

Nuclear Showdown features all of the classic weapons from Duke Nukem 3D: Atomic Edition, as well as the following new weapons:

Nuclear Showdown features all of the classic inventory items from Duke Nukem 3D: Atomic Edition, as well as the following new items:

  • Spacesuit
    • Provides protection on the exposed surface of the moon (expires upon reaching 0%)
  • JumpBoots
    • Enables up to three long-range jumps, as well as shock absorption upon falling (expires upon reaching 0%)
  • Toolbox
    • Repairs broken switches and vehicles (expires upon reaching 0%)
  • Backpack
    • Doubles maximum ammo capacity for all weapons

New health item

  • Thermonuclear Health
    • Adds 100 health, up to a maximum of 300 health

Additional features

Nuclear Showdown also adds the following features to the game:

  • Captive women can be freed, which is now tracked on the level-end screen
  • The Assault Commander produces a jetstream beneath it
  • Weapons now use magazines, which are tracked in the in-game HUD and can be manually reloaded
  • If more ammo is available within an ammo pick-up than the player needs, then the remainder will be left on the ground, rather than vanishing
