Duke Nukem 3D: Megaton Edition is a Duke Nukem 3D compilation that was available for purchase from March 20, 2013 until February 15, 2016. It was sold via Steam for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. In 2015, it was also made available on consoles via PlayStation Network for the PlayStation 3 and handheld PlayStation Vita.
Contents
The compilation includes:
- Duke Nukem 3D: Atomic Edition
- Duke It Out In D.C.
- Duke: Nuclear Winter
- Duke Caribbean: Life's A Beach
Although others are not included, more add-ons can be imported and played in the form of user maps.
Based on the JFDuke3D source port, the compilation features an upgraded OpenGL renderer and an updated in-game HUD.
In January 2014, multiplayer ("Dukematch") capability was added to the compilation.
Removal from retail services
Halfway through the compilation's lifespan, 3D Realms, the compilation's original rights holder, gave the full rights to the Duke Nukem IP to Gearbox Software in 2015.
On February 15th, 2016, the compilation was removed from retail services when Devolver Digital's licensing agreement with Gearbox Software expired. Gearbox Software subsequently decided to terminate sales of the Megaton Edition in favor of Duke Nukem 3D: 20th Anniversary World Tour, released in 2016. It is rumored that the game was removed because 3D Realms never secured the rights to redistribute the expansion packs included with the game.
Customers who purchased the compilation prior to its removal from retail services can still download and play the compilation via Steam and PlayStation Network.
