Duke Nukem Wiki

Dave 3D was an attempt by Leileilol at creating a free content asset replacement for Duke Nukem 3D to pair with the game source code provided by 3D Realms under the GNU General Public License in 2003, similar to the Freedoom project for Doom and Doom II. The title was in homage to Dave Gnukem, a parody of the original Duke Nukem side-scroller.

The project was halted following a takedown request being sent by 3D Realms, alongside the related Ling project for Shadow Warrior. With the rights now belonging to Gearbox Software and Take-Two Interactive it is unclear what their stance would be to such a project. Adam Kalmbach (jute) recycled some of his music contributions to Dave 3D for the Blasphemer project based on Heretic.

A more recent project has been started, founded in 2020 and publicly announced on June 11, 2023, called Luke Ken 3D. It seeks to be more distinct from the original game, with pulp science fiction influences from Commander Keen, Blake Stone and Duke Nukem II.
