Dave 3D was an attempt by Leileilol at creating a free content asset replacement for Duke Nukem 3D to pair with the game source code provided by 3D Realms under the GNU General Public License in 2003, similar to the Freedoom project for Doom and Doom II. The project was halted following a takedown request being sent by 3D Realms, alongside the related Ling project for Shadow Warrior. The title was in homage to Dave Gnukem, a parody of the original Duke Nukem side-scroller. With the rights now belonging to Gearbox Software and Take-Two Interactive it is unclear what their stance would be to such a project. Adam Kalmbach (jute) recycled some of his music contributions to Dave 3D for the Blasphemer project based on Heretic.
