Borderlands is a 2009 first-person shooter video game by Gearbox Software. Borderlands has since spawned an entire franchise of the same name.

Relation to the Duke Nukem franchise

Gearbox Software, the creators of the Borderlands franchise, also own the intellectual property rights to Duke Nukem. The two franchises are completely unrelated, but Gearbox Software has, on at least two occasions, found opportunities to incorporate references to Duke Nukem into Borderlands. In addition, one reference to Borderlands has appeared in a Duke Nukem game.

First, Duke Nukem makes a cameo appearance in the cinematic trailer for the "Game of the Year" edition re-release in 2010. At 2:35 in the video, Duke is briefly seen passing in front of the camera for about one second.

Second, two games from the Borderlands franchise, Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, feature a powerful weapon known as the "Nukem," which functions similarly to a rocket launcher. The Nukem is a clear reference to Duke Nukem not only because of the name but also because it has the Nuke Logo faintly imprinted on its dorsal edges, and its special weapon effect is called "Name Dropper."
