The Alien Gunship is an enemy in Duke Nukem Forever.
Description
Acting as a slower but heavier armored ship of the aliens' air force, they are deployed in a few levels. They are larger than the Alien Fighters and also do more damage per shot with their lasers when compared to the Alien Fighters. When shot at, they emit a blue electricity arc over the entire ship. When heavily damaged, it will emit smoke.
The only way to kill it is to shoot it with turrets or explosive weapons much like fighting a boss. They are however, not bosses since they don't have a health meter, have a lot less health than bosses, and are encountered more often than bosses.
Combat Analysis
The gunships that appear on the levels The Duke Dome and All Your Base only use their machine gun attacks. The rest also use a grenade launcher, greatly increasing their deadliness. It is recommended to fight from cover as the Alien Gunship has no way to attack behind it. As long as the player is out of sight from the central part of the gunship it will not fire it's machine gun (But it may still launch grenades at the player; ensure that cover 'means' cover, not just along the edge of a wall).
Using an RPG is the most effective way to kill gunships. Fire from behind cover at the right wing, if possible; since Duke holds the RPG over his right shoulder, this allows for easier shots behind cover without the gunship firing back. Locking on may not be necessary before firing, as the gunship does not actively dodge RPG shots. Restock ammo when needed (and while at full health and EGO. The Devastator is also a good option in situations where cover is lacking, given how much more quickly it can fire at a gunship. Avoid any and all use of turrets, given how easily they turn the player into a stationary target; the gunship's machine gun attacks are deadly accurate, even while the player is on the move.
The two gunships at Area 51 have reduced health and do not attack with grenades, but will attack Duke for opposite positions, making it far more difficult to find any kind of useful cover. Stay by the hangar as it has only one entrance and can protect the player from both gunships at the same time.
Trivia
- It fills a similiar role to the mini battlelords from Duke Nukem 3D as it's very durable but it doesn't count as a boss and can generally be viewed as a mini boss (given a health bar is not included).
